The Tigray Health Research Institute (THRI) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement a Sample Registration System (SRS) aimed at improving the collection of vital health data at the kebele level across the Tigray region.

This pilot SRS is designed to generate reliable, population-based data on fertility, mortality, causes of death, and socio-economic indicators, strengthening the foundation for evidence-based public health action. It will enable timely and accurate insights into health trends, especially related to child and maternal health, and guide targeted interventions.
Key Objectives:
- Collect accurate, up-to-date health data at the community level
- Identify health trends, particularly in child and maternal health
- Generate essential data on fertility, mortality, and causes of death
- Support data-driven health policies and strategic planning
- Enhance health services and outcomes in the Tigray region
To ensure smooth and effective implementation, the Tigray Regional Data Management Center will take responsibility for supporting and assisting the entire process, from coordination and data integration to technical oversight and quality assurance.

Both THRI and EPHI are committed to sharing expertise, resources, and training to build the capacity of local health workers in data collection and analysis.
Dr. Hayelom Kahsay, Director General of THRI, stated:
“This MOU is a pivotal step toward building a healthier Tigray. The Sample Registration System will empower us to make informed decisions and deliver impactful health interventions for our communities.”

By laying the groundwork for improved health information systems, this partnership marks a critical step toward better public health outcomes and a stronger, data-driven health system in Tigray.
