Mekelle, May 16, 2025The center was established through a collaboration between; Tigray Health Research Institute, Tigray Health Bureau, Ethiopian Public Health Institute, Ministry of Health, and the Global Fund.

Dr. Hayelom Kahsay, Director General of Tigray Health Research Institute, stated that this Genomics and Bioinformatics center is a sophisticated laboratory instrument used by developed countries. He explained that it will be used to research and investigate diseases that may affect Tigray in a more efficient manner. He further emphasized its significant role in improving health, education, and agriculture.

Dr. Amanuel Haile, Head of Tigray Health Bureau, highlighted that the center will enable rapid and improved diagnosis of both endemic and emerging diseases in Tigray. He stressed that, the universities and other relevant bodies to use effectively utilizing this opportunity. He added that the adoption of this technology, which facilitates early disease detection, represents a significant advancement allowing for transformative change.

Dr. Getachew Tolera, Deputy Director General of Ethiopian Public Health Institute, a message delivered via zoom meeting commended Tigray Health Research Institute for its efforts in implementing this technology. He stated that this modern equipment will bring about significant improvements in health care. He also stressed the need for continuous development of evidence-based health policies supported by accurate data.
Kibrti Mehari, a Medical Microbiologist at the Tigray Health Research Institute, She explained that the inaugurated center houses equipment capable of identifying the origin and type of diseases. She emphasized that it allows for DNA sequencing that previously had to be conducted abroad.
