‎The Tigray Health Research Institute (THRI) organized a stakeholder consultation meeting in Adigrat aimed at expanding and strengthening microbiology laboratory services to improve access and benefit the community.

‎The Tigray Regional Health Bureau (TRHB) and the Tigray Health Research Institute (THRI), in collaboration with Project HOPE – Health Security Activity (HSA) and Africa CDC, conducted a two-day stakeholder workshop from July 4–5, 2026 in Adigrat.

‎The workshop focused on expanding microbiology laboratory services and discussing the regional strategic plan for strengthening these services.
‎In his opening remarks, Dr. Hayelom Kahsay, Director General of the Tigray Health Research Institute, emphasized that quality microbiology laboratory services are essential for improving healthcare and ensuring that communities receive quality health services. He highlighted the vital role of stakeholders in expanding these services. He further stressed that all stakeholders share the responsibility of improving access to microbiology services, ensuring the collection of high-quality laboratory specimens, and delivering timely test results to support appropriate patient management. He called on all partners to work together by developing action plans, providing technical support, and conducting regular monitoring to ensure effective implementation.

‎Ms. Amira Yunus representative of Project HOPE–Health Security Activity (HSA) stated that the project has been providing significant support to strengthen the laboratory system and reaffirmed its commitment to continuing both technical and financial assistance in the future.

‎At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant developed a detailed action plan to establish and strengthen microbiology laboratory services within their respective institutions. Following the presentations, participants held extensive discussions on the proposed plans.

‎Representing the Tigray Regional Health Bureau, Mr. Kide Teklu urged hospital management teams to implement the agreed action plans responsibly and in a timely manner. He also expressed sincere appreciation to the Tigray Health Research Institute, Project HOPE–Health Security Activity (HSA), and Africa CDC for their continued technical and financial support.

‎The consultation brought together hospital chief executive officers, laboratory and pharmacy heads, and regional health sector leaders from across Tigray.
