‎May 5, 2026; Mekelle

‎The visit was conducted in the Tigray Health Research Institute (THRI) to appraise the prevailing exigencies and delineate strategies for augmenting support to the region during this protracted crisis. The discussion prioritized the formulation of pragmatic measures to intensify synergies between WHO and its collaborators in buttressing Tigray’s beleaguered health ecosystem.
‎Pivotal topics encompassed the reinforcement of public health laboratories with targeted remediation of acute shortages in supplies and reagents, enhancing Epidemic prone diseases control, the enhancement of regional data stewardship centers, and the acceleration of public health research and institutional capacity building initiatives.

‎Dr. Hayelom, Director General of THRI, furnished a comprehensive exposition of the current predicament in Tigray. He articulated the multifaceted challenges imperiling the health apparatus, including chronic resource scarcities, dilapidated infrastructure, escalating requisites for indispensable services, and acute shortages of essential medicines, fuel, and cash which have critically hampered service delivery and operational continuity. He emphatically advocated for sustained, scaled up interventions from WHO and its consortium of partners. Dr. Hayelom extended his sincere approbation to the WHO delegation for their visitation and resolute involvement amid these formidable adversities.

‎THRI representatives participated assiduously in the proceedings, proffering perspicacious inquiries and pressing for amplified, harmonized patronage from WHO. The WHO Country Representatives responded with candor, addressing the articulated apprehensions and reiterating their resolute dedication to Tigray. They committed to escalating these imperatives to the organization’s uppermost tiers, while vigilantly pursuing resource mobilization and advocacy engagements with national and international stakeholders to amplify succor for the region.
