The findings of a research study on the current state of endemic black liver disease in Tigray were publicly presented.

Tigray Health Research Institute, in collaboration with the Tigray Health Bureau, World Health Organization, Mekelle University, Ethiopian Public Health Institute, and other partner organizations, were engaged on the research study on endemic black liver disease.

Professor Afeworki Mulugeta explained that, the study confirmed that the cause of the disease is the plant “Ajeratem” (a type of weed). He stated that black liver disease, caused by “Ajeratem,” commonly known as “Chena Aregeit,” results from consuming this plant along with other vegetables. The study revealed that the disease is spreading, posing a growing public health risk; it was classified as a fatal disease, highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures.

Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, Head of the Social Development Secretariat, stated that based on the study’s findings, preventive and treatment efforts will be undertaken. He noted that the war in Tigray had contributed to the spread of black liver disease. he also stated that, Tigray Interim Administration is committed to tackling this disease with focused efforts.

Dr. Amanuel Haile, Head of the Tigray Health Bureau, emphasized the need for community awareness campaigns to change attitudes towards black liver disease. He explained that efforts are underway to eradicate the plant in collaboration with the Tigray Bureau of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Tigray Agricultural Research Institute. He further stated that work is being done to develop solutions based on the research findings.

Dr. Hayelom Kahsay, Director General of the Tigray Health Research Institute, stated that the research will continue in other areas of Tigray region. He explained that, the disease was first observed in Tahtai Qoraro area 24 years ago. He stated that the research conducted with partners has confirmed that the plant “Ajeratem” (a type of weed) is the cause of the disease.

Dr. Mekonen H/Selassie, Mr Mulugeta Woldu, Mr. Hagos Degefa, and Mr. Brhane Ayele, researchers from the Tigray Health Research Institute, stated that black liver disease is caused by the plant “Ajeratem,” also known as “Hagay Fetto,” “Chena Aregeit,” and “Qewi Genene,” and by other names depending on the region. They reported that continuous eradication of the plant can prevent the disease. Their study showed that 58.1% of those affected by the disease had died. They stressed the community’s urgent need to understand the problem and eradicate the plant. The study was conducted on over 13,000 people in five districts of the Northern West Zone: Asgede, Adi Daero, Zana, Tahtai Qoraro, and Central Adiabo; more than half of those affected died.

Health care professionals and participants from the Northern West Zone of Tigray reported inadequate attention given to the disease, highlighting the urgent need for increased intervention and appropriate treatment. They further pointed out the lack of sufficient public awareness, resulting in significant mortality within affected communities. They urged the government to address the widespread nature of the disease and develop solutions.
